Common Carbon Steel Alloys for Casting

Carbon steel casting allows a variety of carbon steel alloys to be cast. Common cast carbon steel alloys are: AISI 1010, AISI 1020, AISI 1030, AISI 1035, AISI 1045, AISI 1060. The main difference between these alloys is their carbon content, as the carbon content increases, the steel generally becomes harder and stronger, but the ductility becomes less. Depending on the desired mechanical properties and intended application, CFS Foundry can help our customers select the right carbon steel grade.

Carbon Steel Alloys Carbon Content (%) Main Features Example Parts
AISI 1010 0.08 – 0.13 Low carbon steel with excellent formability and weldability; low strength Simple structural components, brackets, low-stress automotive parts
AISI 1020 0.18 – 0.23 Low carbon steel with improved strength over AISI 1010; good ductility and weldability Shafts, spindles, pins, machinery parts requiring moderate strength
AISI 1030 0.28 – 0.34 Medium carbon steel; can be heat-treated for increased strength and hardness Gears, axles, bolts, crankshafts
AISI 1035 0.32 – 0.38 Medium carbon steel with higher strength and hardness; suitable for parts needing increased durability Clutch discs, connecting rods, bolts
AISI 1045 0.43 – 0.50 Medium carbon steel; can be flame or induction hardened; high strength and wear resistance Axles, gears, shafts, machine parts requiring higher strength
AISI 1060 0.55 – 0.65 High carbon steel; excellent strength and hardness; good wear resistance; can be fully hardened Springs, blades, knives, agricultural tools

What is Carbon Steel Casting?
Carbon steel casting is a steel casting process with carbon content ranging from 0.05% to 2.1% by weight. During its process, molten carbon steel is poured into a mold and fills the mold cavity quickly. After cooling and solidification, the specific shape is formed. The casting process at CFS Foundry usually invoves several steps to finish, including mold creation, wax patterns making, melting, pouring, cooling, also surface finishing.

Our company can create high quality carbon steel castings with high strength, toughness and wear resistance. These excellent properties make carbon steel casting ideal for many applications, such as automotive, agriculture, mining, and other industries. Carbon steel casting can produce parts with complex geometries that would be challenging to produce using forging or machining process.

Types of Carbon Steel for Casting:

Low carbon steel (< 0.20% C): Offer a range of tensile properties via heat treatment and can be hardened to give high surface hardness with abrasion resistance and good core ductility.
Medium carbon steel (0.20 to 0.50% C): This composition allows it to be more durable, pliable, and stronger. A range of tensile strengths are possible with good ductility and shock resistance, readily machined in the softened condition.
High carbon steel (> 0.50% C): Strong and has a good shape memory. This alloy steel for high tensile applications is subject to wear and abrasion and is suitable for heavy-duty applications as well.
